CHEH TO HOLD HEALTHY SCHOOLS ACT HEARING
(Washington, DC) Councilmember Mary M. Cheh (Ward 3), Chair of the Committee on Government Operations and the Environment, will hold a public hearing tomorrow on Bill 18-564, the “Healthy Schools Act of 2009,” which she co-introduced with Chairman Vincent Gray, at 11:00 am.

The bill, which is aimed at promoting the health and physical well-being of all students in public schools, has been revised twice since its introduction after receiving substantial public input through working-group sessions and from working with stakeholders. The Healthy Schools Act aims to do the following:
- Make school meals healthier and more nutritious
- Increase the amount of local and fresh fruits and vegetables served in schools
- Increase exercise and physical activity in schools
- Promote school gardens, recycling, energy reduction, and other green initiatives, and
- Improve school nurse, asthma, and allergy programs
