Bicycle & Pedestrian Working Group

In recent years, the District has seen substantial growth in the number of District residents that move throughout the city on foot or by use of a bicycle. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of bicycle commuters has more than doubled in the past five years, and the number of people walking to work continues to increase. Although the approaches taken by District residents to move throughout the city has changed in recent years, the District’s relevant laws and regulations have not received a comprehensive review or update in many years.

To foster a deliberate, thoughtful, and open discussion on updating the District’s approach to bicycle and pedestrian safety, Councilmember Mary M. Cheh convened the Bicycle & Pedestrian Working Group. Through a series of meetings, this Working Group will evaluate the District’s existing approach to bicycle and pedestrian safety, consider actions taken in other jurisdictions, and discuss innovate proposals and solutions. At the conclusion of these meetings, the Working Group will complete a report that covers the discussions of the Working Group and recommendations that will assist the Council in reforming the District’s laws, regulations, and policies to improve safety for all road users.

Councilmember Cheh invites the public to participate in this discussion. The report and recommendations will be completed by members of the Working Group. Members of the public that wish to participate in the conversation are welcome to attend the meetings and help inform the conversation as the Working Group considers the various topics.
