D.C. Council votes down bill targeting marijuana ‘gifting’ shops

The bill passed 11 to 2. Brooke Pinto (D-Ward 2) opposed what she said was overregulation of the hotels. “The industry is not yet recovered and many of our hotels are still working every day to get back to full operations. I think this bill is an overstep,” she said. And Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3) said the bill was environmentally wrongheaded; hotels should not be required to do unnecessary laundry that wastes water and detergent, she said.... more >

Councilmembers Brooke Pinto of Ward 2 and Mary Cheh of Ward 3 were the only ones to vote No. Pinto called the measure an “overstep,” hoping for a hearing on the issue given that hotels are still recovering from the economic effects of the pandemic. At the time of its most recent DC Council performance hearing, the agency testified that 2021 Diversion Report had been completed, but not been released. The report had not been published at the time this article was written. At a late March 2022 roundtable presided over by Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh (D), Seldman and other veterans of the DC recycling industry all expressed frustrated by the DPW’s lack of transparency when dealing with the community.... more >
